Babe Sapien

As my friend Riki (Riddle) was working on an original design for Hell girl (a female version of Hell Boy created  by Mike Mignola), I started joking about doing a Babe Sapien to match. When Riki finished her costume and planned on wearing it again to Dragoncon I knew it was time to stop joking and actually come up with a design. Between the comics, feature films, and animation there were so many directions I could go.  In the end I went with a design inspired by the movies.

Building Babe

The only part of my body that touches air in this costume are my lips, the rest is covered by neoprene or latex prosthetics. For the hands I took a cast of my friend Mary Kay. Her hands are slightly larger then mine, so I knew they would be a good base to make into gloves. I was able to attach webbing and nails to the gloves.  It’s still very strange to wear the hands of someone else!

The base sculpt of the head was done in clay by the talented Tom Weiser, and I did the chest. When I took these pieces to my friend Chris for help molding them, he ended up refining both of the sculpts. He added a lot of texture and gave me a ton of pointers.  I ended up making a mold of the chest under his supervision, and he cast the entire head for me almost overnight! I feel lucky to be able to learn from such talented people, this costume would not have happened without their help.

I handled the paint job for all the pieces, using an airbrush to complete all the pieces. I also added in water and lighting to the neck piece breathing apparatus.
